about

two companion pieces written for my Master's degree at Boston University

one night in a loft in Paris I randomly came across a book left behind by a friend who had stayed there previously and was transporting their books internationally - that book was Barthes's "A Lover's Discourse: Fragments" which absolutely shattered my brain - it opened up the language I was looking for in thinking about memory, touch, sensitivity, and attention - I would say that these pieces were inspired by that book but writing this in 2022 I think everything I do since then has been inspired by that book - immediately after discovering the Barthes I began writing the piece for amplified string quartet

at the time I was experimenting and exploring compositional notions of chance inside of highly structured containers, the after-effects or traces of musical gestures, physical touch and sensitivity, instrumental intimacy, translation, and fragmentation

so many thanks to Ashot Sarkissjan and JACK Quartet for their time and attention
love and thanks to Georg Kári Hilmarsson & Joshua Fineberg for their help recording and editing
